A large number of Software Development Methodologies have been developed to try to take some of the risk out of technology projects. The structure that these methodologies impose on the development process is intended to reduce the cost of problems and increase the likelihood of success. While methodologies do a good job at encouraging "best practices" in development, they don't ensure success and are not a substitute for a talented team or adequate resources.
